Club News: Reigning Tinman
Champion James Jackson successfully defends his title to claim Sixth Annual Tinman Time Trial Trophy
Reigning
Tinman Champion James Jackson led the pack of competing cyclists in the November 14, 2009 Tinman Time Trial,
edging out runner-up Sid Cottingham by 10 seconds as James successfully defended his Tinman title. This
makes two years in a row that James has won the coveted and prized Tinman trophy.
Unlike recent narrow
victories where the 5-mile bike race has been won in the final seconds on what is approximately known as Victory
Hill, James went out early and never faced any serious challenge. But as someone was overheard to observe, there
is always next year . . . . . Longtime and loyal SGTC member Karen Suttles won the Women's
Division title. _______________________________________________________
Club News: Making Douglas Proud: Brett McNeill joins the elite
group of athletes who have done the ultimate -- Completed an Ironman
Congratulations
to Douglas resident and Georgia State University Law School student Brett McNeill for completing an Ironman held in Louisville,
Kentucky in August 2009, a grueling event separating the best from the best where one must swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles
and then run 26.2 miles. Brett is the son of Brian and Cindy McNeill. . In November 2008 Gary Beall,
Bruck Brewer, Allen Smith and Mike Varnadoe completed the Ford Ironman Florida held at Panama City, Florida . In
the fall of 2007 the Club was pleased to announce that Trevor Douglas had joined the elite group of athletes who
have successfully competed in an Ironman. In a day-after email to fellow SCTC Members about his ordeal, Trevor
wrote: "Thanks to all you SGTC club folks for getting me started in triathlons. But for you, I never would
have even been at the start line yesterday!" Trevor also competed in the Ford Ironman Florida in Panama City Beach, Florida. . Robert
Preston had been the most recent SGTC Member to complete an Ironman prior to Trevor, Robert having completed
one in October 2005 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tuesday: 6:00 p.m. (5:45
p.m. during Daylight Savings Time) at the Douglas Golf and Country Club (3.5 miles; somewhat hilly). Thursday:
6:00 p.m. (5:45 during Daylight Savings Time) at Pre-K across from McDonalds to run on trail (distance varies; flat). Sometimes
in lieu of trail run the group runs at 5:30 p.m. at General Coffee State Park before Daylight Savings Time begins (4.5
miles; very hilly). Saturday: 7:00 a.m. (7:00 a.m. also during the summer months) at Harveys at
the corner of West Ward Street and North Chester Avenue (distances range from 4 to 9 miles plus; flat). _______________________________________________________SGTC has group bike rides on some Sunday afternoons.
Contact Coach C.M.
Jenkins (see contact information below) to find out if a ride is scheduled at Baymeadows for any given
Sunday afternoon at around 2:30. _______________________________________________________SGTC supports these races and events:

by Walmart Transportation in mid-May -- there will be a full century ride. This ride will be
a totally different course, starting and ending in West Green, with a couple of shorter options (email Bob DeCamp for further details). . . . . Pelham Wildlife 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk in Pelham on the
first Saturday in October (call 229-294-4924 or email carolh@camillaga.net for further details). . Tiger Trot (formerly Come Smell the Coffee) 5K (the Park Run) at General Coffee State Park in Douglas on the 2nd Saturday in October (sponsored
by the South Georgia College Cross Country Team) (email Robert Preston at Robert.Preston@sgc.edu for further details). Miles for Smiles (the Hospital Run) in Douglas on the second Saturday in November (sponsored by Coffee Regional Medical Center Wellness Center). The Tinman Time Trial in Douglas on the first Saturday in November. Although
we call this SGTC event a time trial, it is actually more like a duathlon without the second running
leg. The first running leg is the Hospital Run; the Tinman is the cycling leg and consists of a 5
mile bike race around the lake at Baymeadows; and the group passes on the second running leg to instead enjoy some
libation and redfish, wings and sausage with trimmings prepared by Chefs Rick Lewis and Coach C.M. Jenkins.
Although the bike ride alone determines the Tinman champion, to qualify for the coveted Tinman trophy bikers must have
participated in the Hospital Run. Reigning Tinman Champion James Jackson led the pack of competing cyclists in
2009, edging out runner-up Sid Cottingham by 10 seconds. Karen Suttles won the Women's Division title in 2009.
James Jackson led the pack of competing cyclists in 2008, edging out runner-up and reigning Tinman champion Gary Beall by
a mere 3 seconds. Cindy Jackson won the Women's Division title with a time of 16:38. Gary Beall led the pack of
competing cyclists in 2007, edging out runner-up Rick Lewis by a mere 2 seconds to oust reigning Tinman champion
Coach C.M. Jenkins who won the third annual Tinman trophy the previous year. Robert Preston won the second
annual Tinman trophy in 2005, besting James Jackson in the final seconds of the event on Victory Hill, the course's final
and finishing hill. Normally records are made to be broken. But the winner of the first annual Tinman trophy
held in 2004 -- guest Member Daniel Lecuer of Canada -- finished the 5 mile race in 12:00, a record that will likely
remain just that. . Fall Fitness Run in Baxley in latter part of November (contact
Dawn Melton for registration form). Christmas
Parade 5K Run in Douglas on first Saturday in December. This race
is sponsored by the South Georgia Track Club and is one of this area's most exciting and fun races. Runners are cheered
on by thousands of spectators on hand for the annual Christmas Parade through Downtown Douglas at 6:00 p.m. An
awards ceremony following the race is held at The Fern Bank. For a race entry form to be mailed, faxed or emailed, contact
Sid Cottingham; for inquiries and signing up to sponsor this perennial favorite, contact Karen Suttles or Race Director Coach C.M. Jenkins.
